If you’re a first-time homebuyer, then you’re likely wondering what locations in the Washington metropolitan area have the best deals. Let’s pretend your budget is $400,000. How many bedrooms can you get in D.C.? What about Rockville? Here’s the scoop.

Prince William County, Va.

A single-family colonial built in 2003, 16513 Telescope Lane in Dumfries boasts six bedrooms, 3.5 baths and 0.147 acres of lawn. Attractive amenities include a gas fireplace, two-car garage and fully finished basement. This home is located just off Interstate 95, with a 10-minute drive to Woodbridge and a 40-minute drive to D.C. The homeowner association-managed neighborhood, Spy Glass Hill, is a mere 20 minutes from the outdoor glories of Prince William Forest Park.

Montgomery County, Md.

A colonial town house built in 1992, 10106 Vanderbilt Circle in Rockville has three bedrooms, 3.5 baths and a 0.04-acre postage stamp of a lawn. The large back deck, finished basement and one-car garage help make up for the size of the yard. The town house, located near I-270, is an eight-minute drive from Gaithersburg, 10 minutes from downtown Rockville and 35 minutes from downtown D.C. The Decoverly Adventure Homeowners Association is responsible for keeping the neighborhood friendly, and the Washington Woods Park is only five minutes away.
