Former corrections officer admits to assault on inmate

A former D.C. corrections officer pleaded guilty to simple assault in connection with an attack on an inmate.

Darryl Ellison, who worked 23 years for the Department of Corrections, faces a maximum of 180 days in jail, a $1,000 fine or both. He has agreed to also perform 150 hours of community service and pay a $150 fine.

Ellison, 51, was working as a sergeant on June 26, 2011 in the receiving and discharge unit, when another sergeant found contraband inside the sock of an inmate.

The inmate tossed one of his socks, hitting Ellison in the shin. Ellison sprayed the inmate in the face with pepper spray, put him against the wall, and kicked him in the buttocks.

The inmate got down into a prone position and was not resisting, when Ellison administered another burst of pepper spray into the inmate’s face.
