Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office warns of telephone scam

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is advising people about a telephone scam.

In the scam, a caller claims to have information about software applications on the resident’s computer. The caller then tries to get personal information from the resident in order to gain access to their computer, authorities said.

For example, in the past week, a Loudoun County resident got calls from a caller or callers who claimed to be with a company that was “receiving signals” from an application on the resident’s computer and who tried to get information regarding the computer’s IP address and password information. The resident, who did not provide personal information, became suspicious and called authorities.

Anyone who believes they were a victim of the scam can call the Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-0475.
