UPDATE, 11:44 p.m.: Falls Church officials said the barricade situation ended at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, when police had an opportunity to use “non-lethal” force. The suspect surrendered and was taken to a hospital. Authorities did not say what his condition was.
Two other people were inside the home when officials were first called to the property for a dometic disturbance, but police got them outside quickly, authorities said. Police said the man, whose name was not released, had poured gasoline on himself and throughout the house.
Police said charges are pending against the man and authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
ORIGINAL POST, 7:10 a.m.: A man has been barricaded inside a Falls Church home since Monday afternoon, officials said, and police are negotiating with him.
About 4:30 p.m. Monday, police responded to a call of a domestic situation in the 600 block of Hillwood Avenue. One man has barricaded himself inside a home, and he is the only person inside, police spokeswoman Susan Finarelli said.
About 1 a.m. Tuesday, police were able to make contact with the man. A police negotiator has contact with him via telephone, Finarelli said.
Monday night, police broke some of the home’s windows to put a substance inside that would make the man uncomfortable, but it didn’t get him out of the home, Finarelli said.
The man had fired shots, but not at a person, Finarelli said. There have been no injuries.
Officials are not releasing details about the domestic situation.
Falls Church police are joined at the scene by a Fairfax County SWAT team with support from Arlington police. Alexandria police were on their way to provide support Tuesday morning.
Hillwood Avenue is closed from Roosevelt Avenue through Cherry Street. Police asked neighbors to stay in their homes, and this morning police will help people out of their residences.
