Md. day spa operator convicted of making false statements to obtain workers’ comp

A former postal carrier who operated a day spa and fitness center was convicted of making false statements to obtain disability benefits.

Darlene M. Altvater, 48, faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

According to prosecutors, Altvater was employed as a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier in 2001 when she got a on-the-job injury to her head and neck and began receiving federal workers’ compensation benefits.

In 2005, Altvater began operating a salon, day spa and fitness center. Although she continued to receive workers’ compensation benefits, witnesses testified seeing her performing physical acts, demonstrating the use of fitness equipment, performing pedicures and giving massages.
