No charges in boating accident that killed Va. boy

PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (AP) — A prosecutor says no charges will be filed in a boating accident in Prince George County that killed a 10-year-old boy.

Prince George County commonwealth’s attorney Jay Paul said Thursday that six witnesses told state investigators that the July 21 incident was a tragic accident.

The victim and another boy were on an inner tube being pulled by a boat on Butterworth Pond when the accident occurred. The inner tube hit the shoreline when the boat’s operator, Patrick Mathews, made a left turn.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries had earlier identified the victim as Grayson Payne Austin. The other boy, who hasn’t been identified, suffered severe injuries.
