Montgomery County Police announced Monday that they arrested a Texas prisoner in connection with a violent 2003 rape thanks to DNA evidence.
Police were notified last July that a DNA match had been made in connection with the March 3, 2003 rape. DNA evidence collected from the scene matched that of David Martinez, 30, who was already serving time in a Texas prison, police said.
The 2003 rape involved a Silver Spring woman who was walking from her car to her home at about 1:30 a.m. when a man walked towards her, pushed her to the ground and choked her until she passed out, police said. When she regained consciousness, the man was sexually assualting her, police said. The man then carried the woman to the backseat of a car, drove her to Montgomery Knolls Elementary School, and raped her, according to police reports.
The woman managed to escape her attacker and, partially dressed, walked to a nearby house seeking help, police said.
Police said there is no known connection between Martinez and the victim.
Martinez was brought back to Montgomery County last Thursday to face charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sexual assault, first-degree assault, and kidnapping. He is being held without bond as he awaits trial.
