Update 6:01 p.m.: Officials at Marymount University confirmed that history professor Rhett Leverett was the pedestrian killed in Northwest D.C. on Monday morning.
Leverett began working for the Arlington County university in 1991 as an adjunct professor, and in more recent years was hired as a full-time faculty member and academic advisor, according to spokeswoman Shelley Dutton.
“A member of our faculty since 1991, Rhett Leverett was an outstanding teacher and advisor,” Matthew D. Shank, president of the university, wrote in an email to faculty, staff and students Monday afternoon. “Everyone who knew him would agree that this was a man with a great heart. Rhett will be remembered for many things, including his kindness, his sense of humor, and his unfailing dedication to Marymount University and our students.”

A vehicle went up on a sidewalk in downtown Washington this morning and killed a pedestrian, police said.
The accident occurred at about 9 a.m. Monday on Sixth Street NW, not far from the Judiciary Square Metro station. The driver lost control, and the vehicle went onto a sidewalk and struck a man, police spokesman Officer Anthony Clay said.
The man was pronounced dead at a hospital, and the crash is under investigation.
