Suspect in school principal murder to plead guilty

Joel Johnson, 19, will plead guilty to being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, according to Montgomery County Circuit Court records. Johnson is the third of four suspects charged with murdering Brian K. Betts, a principal at D.C.’s Shaw Middle School. Betts was found shot in his home in April. One teen pleaded guilty to the murder and recently was sentenced to 40 years. An accomplice pleaded guilty to robbery and a handgun charge. The case against the fourth suspect remains unresolved.

Man shot at Frederick grocery store

Frederick police are looking for three men in connection to the robbery and shooting of the proprietor of a local grocery store. According to reports, the men entered the International Market around 9 p.m. Saturday and one confronted the store owner with a gun. The 56-year-old man was shot in the chest after a struggle. Police responded to the scene, and the victim was then transported via Maryland State Police helicopter to the shock trauma unit at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. His condition was unknown as of Sunday afternoon.

Police seek McLean bank robber

Police are looking for a man who held up two McLean bank tellers and may be connected to other robberies in the area. According to police, the latest robbery occurred at the Wachovia Bank at 1300 Chain Bridge Road around 9:13 a.m. on Nov. 24. The man showed his gun, then robbed two tellers, getting away with an undisclosed amount of cash. The man is described as black, in his mid-to-late 30s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and between 150 and 170 pounds. He was wearing an “elderly white man” costume mask and dark clothing. No one was injured.
