$8.6m awarded in deadly P.G. stabbing

A Prince George’s County jury has awarded $8.6 million to the family of a man who was fatally stabbed at a club in Forestville, but the verdict may be merely symbolic. The jury found that the CFE Event Center failed to provide adequate security the night George Cooper, 25, was stabbed inside the club three years ago. Cooper was carried outside, where he was left on the sidewalk bleeding to death, according to his mother. The family’s lawyer, Derrick G. Hamlin, told the Associated Press that the family’s victory may be largely symbolic because the club is defunct and its former owner, Kevin Darby, is dead. The club was shut down in 2011 after it was cited under the county’s new dance hall legislation.
