Police shoot suicidal man to death in Silver Spring

A 22-year-old man died after he was shot by Montgomery County police in Silver Spring, police said.

Tracy Woodfork, of Bladensburg, called 911 at about 3:15 a.m. today and said he had a gun, wanted to die, wanted to kill himself and wanted police to kill him, Montgomery County police said.

Emergency personnel determined the man’s location, and police went to a home in the 9500 block of Woodland Drive, where Woodfork’s 23-year-old girlfriend was babysitting other people’s children. Officers were able to get Woodfork’s girlfriend and the three children she was watching out of the home safely.

Meanwhile, officers were speaking with Woodfork, who was in an exterior rear stairwell of the residence leading to the basement and who had a firearm. Police told him to come up from the stairwell without the gun, but when Woodfork started ascending at about 5 a.m., he had a handgun in his hand. He was shot by police during an “encounter,” police said.

Woodfork was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Investigators have determined that the weapon Woodfork was holding was a replica handgun.
