Two internal investigations have marred the Prince George’s County Police Department’s start to February and are keeping new inspector general Carlos Acosta busy in his first days on the job.
Acosta, who was officially introduced as the department’s IG on Wednesday, is leading an investigation into two officers’ questionable account of a police-involved shooting in Brentwood Friday evening. Video evidence of the incident did not support the officers’ initial reports from the scene, and some charges against a local teenager were dropped.
Cpl. Donald Taylor and another officer were suspended with pay as officials investigate.
And on Wednesday, police announced the suspension of Cpl. Derrick Neumer, who was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in St. Mary’s County Tuesday night.
Acosta, the police’s first inspector general since December 2010, said the department would live up to its promise for integrity under his watch.
“Things will no longer be swept under the carpet in anyone’s mind,” Acosta said. “I don’t think they ever were, but people need to see a transparent process.”
