Jogger sexually assaulted in Bethesda

A 21-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted on the Capital Crescent Trail in Montgomery County, police said.

The woman told police that she was jogging on the trail between Massachusetts Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard at about 7 p.m. Sunday when she stopped to let deer cross. She was hit on the head from behind, became unconscious and woke up a short time later in the woods off the trail, Montgomery County Police spokesman Capt. Paul Starks said.

The victim got back on the trail and called for help. A 40-year-old man who was jogging heard her and took her to the 4900 block of Brookeway Drive in Bethesda, where she called police. She was taken to a hospital with a head injury.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s who was wearing dark clothing.

Hoey to head up 7th Police District

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has promoted a D.C. commander she once demoted.

Robin Hoey has been chosen to head up the 7th District to replace retiring Cmdr. Joel Maupin.

Hoey was demoted from commander of the 6th District to captain and transferred to head up the city’s Central Cell Block shortly after Lanier took command of the force. She did not suggest that Hoey’s work was inadequate.

Hoey filed a lawsuit to get his job back with back pay, but the D.C. Court of Appeals affirmed that the police chief has the authority to demote high-ranking officers at her discretion.
