Bowie man charged multiple times with sexually abusing boys

A Prince George’s County man was arrested multiple times in August for sexually abusing young boys in 2011 and 2012, police said.

Michael David Brochu, 52, of Bowie was most recently arrested last week. He was behind bars on Friday, according to a Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office spokeswoman, but he spent the month of August in and out of custody.

The first time Brochu was charged with sex crimes last month was on Aug. 3. He posted $200,000 bond and was released on Aug. 7.

Between Sept. 1, 2011 and July 31, 2012, Brochu sexually abused an 8-year-old boy, police said. Brochu had temporary supervision over the boy, and the abuse occurred at Brochu’s home.

He was charged in Prince George’s County District Court with perverted practice and a fourth-degree sex offense. The same day he had been released from commitment in this case, he was charged in two others.

In one of those cases, Brochu is accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy who was a family friend between April 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012. In this case, Brochu is charged with sex abuse of a minor, third-degree sex offense and second-degree assault, police said.

In the other case, police said, Brochu sexually abused a 6-year-old family member at a Bowie pool on June 21, 2012. He is charged with sex abuse of a minor and third-degree sex offense in this incident.

Brochu was arrested for a second time on Aug. 8 after turning himself in. But he was released on Aug. 17 on bond in part because he voluntarily surrendered to authorities, The Gazette reported.

The most recent arrest relates to the alleged sexual abuse of an 11-year-old boy during the summer of 2011. Police said that Brochu encountered the boy at a pool in Bowie. In this case, he is charged with third- and fourth-degree sex offense as well as second-degree assault.

The Gazette reported that Brochu admitted to police that he had prior offenses after his first arrest in August. A Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman said that Brochu appears to have pleaded guilty to child abuse charges during the 1980s.
