Comey to release crime novel, a ‘high-stakes legal thriller’

Former FBI Director James Comey is going from crime fighter to crime writer.

His publisher, the Mysterious Press, announced on Tuesday that Comey will write two crime novels, with the first book slated for publication in the spring of 2023.

“I’m excited to take readers inside fascinating worlds I’ve come to know from my time in government and the private sector,” Comey said in a press release.

“These stories are fiction but inspired by real work I’ve done. They will offer a rarely seen view of interesting people and institutions. And I’m honored to be doing it with a legendary publisher,” he added.

The former FBI chief’s first book, Central Park West, is described by his publisher as a “high-stakes legal thriller” that will tell the story of an assistant U.S. attorney’s case against a high-profile mobster that is “derailed when a shocking turn of events” unfold.

The publisher said Comey draws “from personal experience” to reveal “the detective work, backdoor dealings, and tradecraft” involved in building a case against the Mafia.

As a U.S. attorney in Manhattan, Comey helped prosecute members of the Gambino crime family. His career in federal government came to an abrupt end in May of 2017 when former President Donald Trump fired Comey as the FBI investigated whether Trump advisers colluded with Russia to influence the outcome of the 2016 election, allegations that proved to be false.

Central Park West is the first book of a planned series, according to the publisher.

“It is a thrill and an honor to launch the crime writing career of James Comey,” said Otto Penzler, founder of Mysterious Press. “He is a remarkably talented stylist with superb storytelling ability, and we look forward to a long, successful, and happy relationship.”
