Multiple people were shot during an active shooter situation at Perry High School in Perry, Iowa, on Thursday morning.
Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said during a press conference that there are multiple gunshot victims, but the exact number and conditions of the victims are still undetermined. Infante said police had identified the shooter and that the threat was no longer active but did not provide any additional information.

Law enforcement officials told multiple outlets that the shooter is dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Three other people were injured, including two students and an administrator, the sources said, and one of the injuries may be fatal.
“There is no further danger to the public. The community is safe,” Infante said. “We’re just now working backwards, trying to figure out everything that happened.”
Infante said reports about the shooting came in at 7:37 a.m. and an officer responded within seven minutes of that first report, who then located multiple gunshot victims. The sheriff said the school had not started yet, so there were limited numbers of students in the building at the time.
Another news conference will be scheduled for later Thursday afternoon, Infante said.
Shooting victims from Perry High School are being transported to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, a hospital spokesperson told NBC News. The conditions of the victims were not provided.
Iowa Department of Public Safety confirmed in a statement on Thursday morning that there was a school shooting at Perry High School. Dallas County confirmed on its Facebook page that law enforcement officers were at the scene responding to a shooting at the high school.
Thursday was the first day back for Perry Community School District students for the second semester. The district — composed of an elementary school, middle school, and high school — is made up of about 1,800 students, per the website. Classes at Perry High School have been canceled for the day, per local outlet KCCI.
Information from a local police scanner indicated that at least five ambulances were en route to the scene. A reunification center has been set up at the McCreary Community Building in Perry, according to a dispatcher.
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who is set to host a campaign event in Perry on Thursday, responded to the shooting reports in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Pray for the community in Perry, Iowa this morning,” Ramaswamy wrote.
