Homeless man in Arlington attacks with pen
A man police described as “mentally disturbed” tried to stab another man with a pen in Arlington County, according to police.
Zachary Thomas, 23, was milling about the 4200 block of N. Fairfax Drive the morning of Sept. 19 when he approached a man walking to work. When the man asked Thomas to leave him alone, Thomas said “I will kill you,” pulled a pen out of his pocket and attempted repeatedly to stab the victim, police said.
The two men briefly fought, with both sustaining minor injuries, before Thomas was arrested and charged with malicious wounding.
Thomas, who police said has no fixed address, is being held without bond.
Clyde’s executive embezzled restaurant funds
A former Clyde’s Restaurant Group executive pleaded guilty to mail fraud in a scheme in which the Vienna, Va., resident embezzled nearly $650,000 from the restaurant, U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen announced Wednesday.
Nancy Preston, 55, diverted money from Clyde’s from 2001 to 2011 to pay her personal credit card and other expenses totaling $647,547.
Preston was the corporate controller for the Washington-area restaurant group from 1992 to September 2011.
She agreed to pay $389,069 to Clyde’s in addition to forfeiting $258,000 worth of stock awards and options.
Preston faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, as well as additional fines and penalties.
