Police: District Heights cop shoots handcuffed man

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) — Prince George’s County homicide detectives are investigating the shooting of a handcuffed suspect by a District Heights police officer.

Police say Calvin Kyle was shot in the back Thursday evening after being pulled over, handcuffed and placed in a police cruiser on allegations that he was riding a stolen motorcycle. The officer, Sgt. Johnnie Riley, has been placed on paid administrative leave while the county police investigate.

Kyle survived the shooting and is in the hospital.

Kyle’s family say the shooting was unjustified amid reports that he was shot as he tried to flee the police cruiser.

Court records indicate that Kyle also uses the name Kalvin Kyle.

District Heights has its own police force.
