Four children and their grandmother were killed after a fire tore through a Baltimore home Thursday morning.
Among the survivors were a baby and a man who jumped from a second-story window to escape the flames, the Associated Press reported.
A 19-year-old mother dropped her 2-month-old son into the hands of a rescuer. The baby survived, and so did the mother. But her other children, ages 4 and 2, did not.
“It looked like an inferno, and it’s surprising that anyone survived in this fire,” said fire department spokesman Chief Kevin Cartwright.
Two firefighters were also injured and in stable condition.
