Police: Drunk driver abandons car with engine running, baby inside
A 48-year-old Woodbridge man was charged with child neglect and driving under the influence after police said he abandoned a vehicle with the engine still running and a toddler in the back seat.
About 1:30 a.m. Monday, Prince William County police responded to report of a possible crash in Dumfries. Instead of a traffic accident, police found an abandoned car — still running, in the middle of the road, with an 8-month-old girl in a child’s seat.
Police found the alleged driver Nana Akoanor II, at a nearby house.
Wife admits to contracting scheme
A wife of a former Department of Energy executive has pleaded guilty to defrauding the U.S. government.
Karen Strayer, 48, of Loudoun County, admitted that she and husband Michael Strayer, schemed to award her a contract that paid her $400,000 a year to publish four issues of a magazine each year in 2008 and 2009, and then worked out $1 million contract in 2010.
She pleaded to defrauding the government by causing contracts to be awarded which secretly benefitted her and her husband.
Michael Strayer was also indicted but has since died, prosecutors said.
Inmate stabs 2 in escape
A Maryland inmate stabbed two people and led police on a 12-mile car chase before being recaptured Tuesday morning, state police said.
Larry J. Johnson, 38, an inmate at the Cumberland facility, was on a work crew on Interstate 68 about 7:30 a.m. when he stabbed an officer in the torso with a pair of pliers, police said.
Johnson flagged down a 22-year-old driver from West Virginia, stabbed him in the head and drove away in his car.
The chase ended when Johnson lost control of his car and crashed into a tree.
