Md. inmate shot after walking away from prison

CHURCH HILL, Md. (AP) — Maryland authorities say an inmate serving time for assault is dead after he walked away from a prison and allegedly said officials would have to kill him before he went back.

Police say the 25-year-old inmate walked away from Church Hill’s Eastern Correctional Institution on Wednesday. He then allegedly broke into a Centreville home and stole a gun and other items.

Sheriff’s deputies and state troopers saw the inmate walking on a road and tried to confront him, but the man fired a gun and fled into a field.

A Centreville police officer arrived and tried to talk the man into surrendering. But the inmate allegedly said he wasn’t going back to prison and reached as if trying to pull something from his waistband. The officer then shot him.
