Suspect in Aruba disappearance charged with indecent exposure

A Gaithersburg man suspected in the disappearance of his vacation partner in Aruba was arrested in Annapolis after he was found naked in an SUV with a woman.

Gary Giordano, 51, was charged with one count of indecent exposure, Annapolis police said. A Tennessee woman identified as 45-year-old Carol Ann Bock was also charged with one count of indecent exposure.

“While we recognize that Mr. Giordano enjoys an infamous reputation, the Annapolis arrest was simply a matter of effective police work in response to citizen complaints,” Police Chief Michael Pristoop said in a statement Tuesday.

Officers went to a parking garage at 150 Gorman St. on Friday for a report of possible sexual activity inside a vehicle. According to a police report, officers found Giordano and Bock lying down in the rear cargo area of a Cadillac Escalade.

One officer saw Bock with her left breast exposed and a blanket hanging from the left side of the SUV’s interior that seemed to be an effort to hide the pair’s activity, the report said. The officer shined a light on the SUV, and Bock pulled a sheet up to cover her breast and Giordano adjusted a towel over his midsection.

When Giordano was adjusting the towel, another police officer saw Giordano’s genitals, according to the report. This officer told him to put clothes on and exit the vehicle, and the officer saw that Giordano was naked. Bock was also told to get dressed and leave the SUV.

Giordano was suspected in the disappearance of 35-year-old Robyn Gardner. He was detained in Aruba for several months but was released in November.

Gardner, of Frederick, went missing in early August. Giordano denied wrongdoing and claimed she was swept away at sea while the two were snorkeling. Giordano had taken out a $1.5-million accidental-death insurance policy on her shortly before the trip, according to Aruban authorities.

The case garnered international media attention and drew comparisons to the still-unsolved disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an American teenager who vanished on the Caribbean island in 2005.
