Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin told reporters in a livestreamed briefing around 4 p.m. that the shooting occurred over a dispute between the hotel clerk and the suspect concerning money.

There is at least one victim with a gunshot wound known so far, but Shahin said he could not comment on the identity or status of the victim’s injuries.

For the time being, Shahin said, the situation is a waiting game, and his main goal is to work toward a peaceful resolution and preserve life.

“I would implore him to come out peacefully,” he said. “Nobody wants to see anybody else get hurt as a result of the incident.”

Public Information Officer Dan Bartok said the shooter was not yet in custody but was “contained” on the third floor of the hotel, barricaded and armed with a long gun.

He said they are actively negotiating with the shooter and, while they have evacuated the five-story hotel, they are still checking rooms.
