Joe Biden defends son Hunter when asked about his troubles and Republican attacks

President Joe Biden defended Hunter Biden and shrugged off any concerns about him when asked about Republican investigations into his son’s overseas business dealings.

“I love my son, number one,” Joe Biden said during a Sunday interview on 60 Minutes when asked whether any of Hunter Biden’s troubles have caused problems for the president or for the United States. “He fought an addiction problem. He overcame it. He wrote about it. And no, there’s not a single thing that I’ve observed at all from — that would affect me or the United States relative to my son Hunter.”

Hunter Biden revealed he was under federal investigation for his taxes shortly after the 2020 election, and he is reportedly also being scrutinized for possible money laundering, as well as for possible foreign lobbying violations under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Republicans in the House and Senate are investigating the president’s son, and the inquiries are likely to ramp up if the GOP takes control of Congress after the midterm elections.

Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) have demanded the Justice Department and FBI launch a full investigation into Hunter Biden’s laptop, including the revelation unearthed by the Washington Examiner that the president apparently unwittingly financed his son’s participation in an escort ring tied to Russia.

Records also show Hunter Biden believed some of his Chinese business partners were connected to Chinese intelligence services and that he worried about the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

The president’s son held a lucrative position on the board of Ukrainian energy giant Burisma when his father was vice president. He also pursued business deals in China and elsewhere during and after his father’s tenure and received millions from Chinese government-linked entities. He raked in millions thanks to these associations from 2013 to 2018.

Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss is leading the criminal inquiry into the president’s son, and the GOP now wants to make sure he can carry out the investigation without interference.
