Santorum super-PAC calls Romney an Obama clone

Satisfied that GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum has maxed out his support among Michigan social conservatives, the team helping his rallying candidacy now plans to air an TV ad that describes Santorum as better than Mitt Romney on economics.

With a $600,000 buy on top of $700,000 already spent, the Red, White and Blue Fund super-PAC ad also makes the case that Romney is an Obama clone who can’t beat the real McCoy.

The ad, starting later Tuesday, opens with the announcer saying: “How can Mitt Romney beat Barack Obama when on the vital decisions they’re not much different?” The ad, not fully released yet, ends saying: “Who can win? Rick Santorum. The principled leader who’s fought against big government.”

Said a Santorum ally, “he is close to maximizing the social conservative vote and the battle is over people who have economic concerns. The ad also is the first to say Romney is not able to win against Obama because he’s just too similar. Instead, Santorum is the better matchup for November.”
