As if the country isn’t divided enough over Washington politics, partisan voters are now splitting up even more.
In a remarkable survey shared with Secrets, left-leaning voters are looking to President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats for leadership while Republicans are looking to their governors and state leaders.
It used to be that voters would look to both for direction, but with the recent partisan attacks by Biden on Republican-run states and former President Donald Trump’s criticism of Democratic-run states, that new alignment has been locked in.

In the Trafalgar Group survey for Convention of States Action, both sides were even in their support for their chosen political leaders.
It found that 63.1% of Republican primary voters trust governors and state legislators to “defend their fights and promote their issues.”

Among Democratic primary voters, 63.5% trust Biden and Hill leaders.
Independents turned out to be the tiebreaker. Trafalgar said that 51.6% trust Republicans at the state and national levels.
“Republicans, independents, and many Democrats are watching with horror as Washington, D.C., pursues anti-freedom policies that are destroying the fabric of the nation they love,” said Mark Meckler, president of Convention of States Action.
He noted that GOP state leaders, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are filling the leadership gap in Washington for many Republicans.
Meckler also said that the poll suggests a return to state power centers and a partial rejection of Washington’s overbearing hand.
“The framers of the Constitution designed our system to operate this way. We are seeing rising momentum for a Convention of States that will return Washington, D.C., back to its original, strict limits and put states back in charge,” he said.
