Reversal: Right direction turns down

After a two-month spurt up, the percentage of Americans believing the nation is headed in the right direction has reversed course. Now seven in 10 likely voters now think that the nation is headed in the wrong direction.

The downturn found by Rasmussen polling ends an eight-week growth in optimism by voters in the direction of the country, possibly knocked down from a meager 34 percent to Wednesday’s 31 percent by choking gas prices.

In November, just 16 percent said the nation was heading in the right direction and it has surged since, reaching a peak of 34 percent last week. But today’s reveral of 3 percent ended that upward growth.

Now, said the pollster, 61 percent of likely voters believe the country is on the wrong track. What’s more, the public’s view of the right direction-wrong track is exactly where it was just a few weeks after President Obama took office.

Better news for Obama is his steadying job approval. Rasmussen found that 49 percent approve and 49 percent disapprove.
