He’s already one of the busiest newsies in Washington, but CNN’s Wolf Blitzer is also angling to be the city’s sports ambassador. Just consider: When he gets a break from the cable network and his popular show, The Situation Room, Blitzer scoots off to watch games of the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, Washington Redskins and Washington Nationals.
“When I’m not in the Situation Room,” he tells us, “I always try to be at one of our stadiums.”
Even when out of town, he’s carrying the D.C. banner. On Monday, for example, Blitzer, was broadcasting from the Arizona site of Wednesday’s CNN GOP presidential debate and made it to a Phoenix Suns-Wizards game where he sat with team President Ernie Grunfeld. “We’re not having a fabulous year, but I still love the team and still have high hopes down the road,” says the Wizards season ticket holder.
And this coming weekend, he’s attending the NBA All-Star Game in Orlando, hosted by CNN sister network TNT. “I always go, it’s so much fun.”
And with a what the heck attitude, he adds that he’ll make a side trip to catch a National’s spring training game while in Florida. “I want to see my team get ready for an exciting season,” he said. “I go to as many games as possible, given my crazy schedule. This is going to be a strong year for us. I have a good feeling and will do some scouting in Florida this weekend.”
But like most D.C. fans, he wishes the teams weren’t so erratic. “I just wish we could win a bit more often,” he said, adding: “I have hope.”
