Liberal Media Scream: ‘Prestige press’ pro-Trump, ‘easier coverage than he deserves’

This week’s Liberal Media Scream features a view about the media’s Trump bias that even the former editor of the New York Times would mock.

It comes from Atlantic writer David Frum who said, in an apparent reference to the media biggies President Trump calls “fake news,” that the “prestige media” lets the president off the hook too often.

Frum, on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” Sunday, said that “relative to the truth, the prestige press in this country has a pro-Trump bias. Relative to the truth, Trump gets easier coverage than he deserves.”

And he said pro-Trump commentators should be working for the Home Shopping Network.

He was reacting to the observation, in an upcoming book by former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson, that the news pages the Times and the Washington Post are “unmistakably anti-Trump.”

Frum on the Jan. 6 “Reliable Sources”:

“Relative to the truth, the prestige press in this country has a pro-Trump bias. Relative to the truth, Trump gets easier coverage than he deserves. The surest way onto the op-ed page of a prestigious paper is to come up with some angle to explain why something the president has done is less crazy or dangerous than it seems. Networks, like this one, give a lot of airtime to people who normally would be working for the Home Shopping Network, who wouldn’t be on at all.”

Media Research Center Vice President of Research Brent Baker explains our weekly pick: “What planet is Frum living on? You can argue that Trump is a terrible president who deserves negative coverage, but to contend the ‘prestige press’ has a bias in favor of Trump because they occasionally allow someone to defend him? That’s just nuts. By any measure, Trump is on the receiving end of the most hostile press of any president in the past century.”

Rating: Five out of five screams.
