Maybe it’s a sign of how little influence President Joe Biden has, maybe it indicates growing fear of crime, but American support for more gun control has taken a huge hit over the past five months.
On the day after Biden repeated his demand for an “assault weapons” ban following a shooting at a Colorado gay club, Gallup today revealed that support for stricter gun laws has dropped nine-points to what is now a “diminished majority.”

The pollster said support dropped from 66% in June to 57% today. Some 42% are fine with current laws or want them less strict.

“Americans’ calls for stricter gun laws have fallen since June, when back-to-back massacres in a grocery store and a school resulted in an increased appetite for gun control. This pattern, whereby public support for tougher gun control spikes after prominent mass shootings and falls back as the memory of them fades, has been evident historically in Gallup polling,” said the survey outfit.
The drop in support tracks well with new reports that those holding concealed carry permits are at a record high and more minorities, especially women, are buying weapons for self defense as crime rates surge.
