Less than 30 minutes into Thursday’s Senate hearing on sexual assault allegations against embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, a key Democrat dispatched a memo hoping to raise money off the explosive event.

Sen. Mazie Hirono, who has fundraised off the potential scandal before, wrote to donors:
“I have limited time to campaign for our re-election or to fundraise — making us particularly vulnerable to right-wing attacks. So, while I’m focused on stopping Kavanaugh’s nomination and finding the truth, I’m asking you to step up now and ensure my team in Hawaii has everything they need to win our campaign in November.”
MoveOn.org also began a fundraiser off the hearings, calling on supporters to also sign a petition that said: “We stand in support of Christine Blasey Ford. Her allegations deserve a RESPECTFUL audience and response from the Senate Judiciary Committee. We believe her. We did not do enough for Anita Hill – never again. We must do more to support women who come forward to challenge institutions of power and privilege. This is our chance.”
The Hirono fundraiser was tweeted out by CNN White House correspondent Kate Bennett.
