U.S. Capitol Police evacuated the Rayburn House Office Building after a suspicious package was found near Jan. 6 committee Chairman Bennie Thompson’s (D-MS) office.
The police gave the all-clear shortly after the building was evacuated, having found nothing of concern in the package.

“This afternoon Congressional staff inside the Rayburn House Office Building reported that they received a letter with concerning language,” USCP said in a statement. “We just screened it and determined it not to have anything dangerous inside. Powder was not found inside.”
The suspicious package comes ahead of the Jan. 6 select committee’s public hearing on Thursday. Members of the panel and their families have faced violent threats since the launch of their investigation into the Capitol riot, with several receiving security details since the start of public hearings over the course of the summer.

Earlier this year, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) tweeted a photo of a letter addressed to his wife threatening to execute him and stating that she and her children will join him “in hell.”
The Rayburn incident came around the same time a suspicious substance in an office building near the White House sent one person to the hospital Tuesday.
