A video released Thursday appears to show Kentucky Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes dodging repeatedly the question of whom she voted for in 2012.
“Did you vote for Barack Obama in 2012?” a man off-camera asked her three times at a campaign event in Lexington, Ky., Tuesday. Grimes, who currently serves as the Kentucky Secretary of State, failed to answer the question three times.
Grimes, who is trying her best to distance herself from President Obama, might not have heard the question in the scrum of reporters, but she also might now have wanted to answer it for the camera. A spokesperson for the Grimes campaign did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
The Democratic Senate candidate currently trails her Republican opponent, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., 42 percent to 47.3 percent, according to the Real Clear Politics average.
McConnell’s strategy throughout the race has been to tie Grimes to Obama, who is very unpopular in the Bluegrass State, reminding Kentucky voters at every turn that she supports many of the president’s positions.
The race has also been extraordinarily expensive, with outside groups on both sides committing a great deal of cash to the election. Pro-McConnell outside groups have put in $3.9 million in independent expenditures to support his campaign, while committing $10 million to oppose the Democrat. Pro-Grimes outside groups have spent only $200,000 to boost her, but $6 million opposing McConnell.
