Disney sent out the memo to its subsidiaries to grovel before gay and transgender activists over Florida’s Parent Rights in Education Act. If only Disney was as concerned about the genocidal regime to which it constantly panders.
Disney outlets from ESPN to local ABC news affiliates sent out statements of support for the gay and transgender community after Disney was raked over the coals by activists for not more aggressively opposing Florida’s bill. Teaching second graders about transgenderism is very important to Disney, apparently. Employees staged a walkout, while ESPN personalities used network airtime to complain that teachers aren’t allowed to teach kindergartners about sexual orientation.
Florida Democrats were also caught up in the pressure campaign, being pressured out of holding their big annual fundraiser at a Walt Disney World Resort by the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus. As is the case with most corporations and institutions, Disney is in trouble for not being in complete lockstep with gay and transgender activists.
Unfortunately, no such pressure exists when it comes to Disney’s relationship with China. Gay and transgender activists will throw a fit when a state says their propaganda can’t be taught to young children in classrooms, but no such pressure campaign has come for Disney on China, no matter how brazen its pandering has become.
In the credits for the live-action Mulan remake, Disney thanked Chinese government groups that were involved in concentration camps in Xinjiang, with little backlash. While Disney Parks posts rainbow mice on Instagram while claiming to “oppose any legislation that infringes on basic human rights,” Shanghai Disneyland Park brings in roughly $1 billion in revenue.
There haven’t been employees walkouts when Disney whitewashed Marvel characters to please China or when the star of Mulan praised China’s crackdown on protesters in Hong Kong. Disney did not have all of its affiliates tout their opposition to China’s genocide of the Uyghurs or its other abuses. Teaching young children about sexual orientation is important. Genocide? Not so much.
Disney for years has been able to pretend that it cares about human rights or anything except money because it puts on a liberal face in the United States while groveling to China. Left-wing activists in the U.S. can drag the company around from pathetic faux domestic controversy to pathetic faux domestic controversy, but China always takes top priority.
