President Obama should remember that his margin of victory was only 7 percent. Even though seven out of every 15 voters rejected Obama’s candidacy, he claimed a mandate for his entire program. With the country now about equally divided on his approval rating and many of his legislative priorities, including health care reform, favored only by a minority of Americans, Obama has an even lesser mandate for his agenda.

Debate over global warming is not over
Re: “Global warming is a falling doctrine,” Jan. 14
Cal Thomas mixes two concepts, climate change leading to global warming and the role of human activity in causing it. He uses recent cold weather to argue against the former, and quotes from a letter from more than 150 scientists at the recent Copenhagen climate summit who question the latter. He talks of global warming “disciples and deniers.” However, I feel confident that if could poll those 150 scientists, he would find that most (if not all) were global warming “disciples,” but that they question the degree to which this warming is caused by human activity. The debate over global warming is not over. The debate is over what portion of the warming is due to human activity.

Gay marriage law ignores rights of children

D.C. Council members defend gay people’s human rights. What about children’s rights, which the United Nations seems very concerned about? My father was my hero, as close to me as my mother. A teacher, he encouraged his daughters and his sons to appreciate the wonders of life. Thanks to him, I can read and enjoy music. Thanks to him, I continued with my studies, which allowed me to get a doctorate and teach — the career of my dreams. I write this to explain why adoption by same-sex couples is not desirable. It will perpetuate families where children are deprived of a parent of the opposite sex.
