Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn’t exactly known for her eloquent political commentary. But the New York Democrat and socialist darling’s rhetoric has been especially difficult to follow in recent weeks as she navigates the #MeToo charge against presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
Former Senate staffer Tara Reade has accused Biden of sexually assaulting her in 1993. In recent weeks, Reade has (finally) received more attention in the liberal media, and additional corroborating evidence supports her claim, and new questions about her credibility have emerged in the interim. Ocasio-Cortez has promised to vote for Joe Biden, but the congresswoman has also firmly aligned herself with the “believe women,” anti-due-process wing of the Left.
And remember, Ocasio-Cortez said back in mid-April that it’s “legitimate to talk about” the charges against Biden, calling the “silencing of dissent” a form of “gaslighting.” More recently, she has referred to Reade as a “survivor,” said the claim “isn’t clear cut,” and stated her belief that “It certainly seems as though something has happened.” Yet Ocasio-Cortez also, apparently, plans to vote for him anyway.
Yes, that’s right: The woke congresswoman who has promised to fight for women and #MeToo is evidently still throwing her weight behind someone she suspects is likely a sex criminal.
What does that say about Ocasio-Cortez’s ethics? Her sense of morality? Her commitment to consistency? There is no “lesser of two evils” argument that can get the congresswoman out of such a clear contradiction, especially considering that as a New York voter, Ocasio-Cortez’s single vote isn’t going to make any difference. Ocasio-Cortez faces a choice between principles and partisanship, and it seems like she’s coming down on the wrong side.
It’s a disappointment. Her foolish policy flubs and horrid ideology aside, the congresswoman’s appeal was always that she was a principled, anti-establishment revolutionary. But if her continued, contorted support for Joe Biden is anything to go by, it’s sure starting to look like Ocasio-Cortez has sold out to Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the Democratic establishment.
