Trump wins, but with most delegates opposed in 40 years

Donald Trump officially won the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday. When the final tally came in, Trump had 1,725 delegate votes with 721 opposed.

The last time so many GOP delegates voted against the eventual nominee was 1976, when President Gerald Ford narrowly won the nomination against Ronald Reagan. Ford got 1,187 votes from the delegates to Reagan’s 1,070.

In every convention from 1980-2008, no more than 100 delegates voted against the eventual GOP nominee. In 2012, Ron Paul got 190 votes.
