NYT softens, then hardens, healthcare debacle headline

President Trump and the Republican-held Congress suffered an embarrassing defeat Friday as they decided at the last minute to pull their the deeply unpopular American Health Care Act.

After news broke Friday that the GOP would pull its healthcare bill due to lack of support, the New York Times ran an accurate and unflattering headline: “Trump’s First Legislative Effort fails as G.O.P. Pulls Bill to Repeal Obamacare.”

Trump responded to the bill’s failure Friday by blaming Democrats for refusing to support the now-dead legislation.

Interestingly enough, the Times then amended its headline to the less-unflattering, “Trump Blames Democrats as Major Push to Repeal Health Law Fails.”

The newspaper then changed the headline for a third time so that it now reads, “In Spectacular Defeat for Trump, Push to Repeal Health Law Fails.”

Make up your minds already.

For what it’s worth, the third iteration of the headline, though unflattering, is not unfair.

There’s no getting around the fact that the GOP’s answer to former President Obama’s Affordable Care Act (known more commonly as “Obamacare”), was an epic failure, especially considering Trump promised he’d ask Congress to, “immediately deliver a full repeal” on “day one” of his presidency.

The Republican’s ACHA was poorly written, rushed and ultimately failed because GOP lawmakers refused to get behind it, despite the Trump’s team’s best efforts.

If you’re a Republican, there’s no silver lining to failing to come through on a promise that’s been nearly a decade in the making.
