So, today is the big day. We’re just hours away from knowing what we’ve waited to know all year. For some people, especially on the Left, you’ve perhaps been living the last two years of your life just waiting for today.
So what do you do in the next eight hours? Aside from voting, I mean?
Here’s my advice: Do nothing. Don’t fret about whatever anecdotes you hear about things happening at the polls. Ignore them. Don’t follow Twitter obsessively all day. In fact, log out of Twitter and Facebook (if you’re still using it) until tonight. Don’t read the news at all. Put it all out of your mind. With the strict exception of your vote, your involvement over the next eight hours isn’t going to change things one way or another.
Do your job today. At lunchtime, go outside and take a long walk. If you work from home or at home, then bake something. I’ll be going to the students’ mass today at my children’s parish school. Just do something that isn’t related to the election or politics. Then tonight, go home to your family (if you have one), and then start in on the election – but only after dinner.
Yes, politics affects your life. But in the end, life really isn’t about politics. And besides, tonight, you’re going to have all the information you want, and perhaps more than you can even digest, about how the country is going to be governed for the next two years. If it’s good news, then you’ll be fine. If it’s bad news, then you will have at least spared yourself the time obsessing over an outcome you couldn’t control in the first place.
You can afford to wait a few hours.
