Meaty earmarks for Tom Harkin

WHO: Sen. Tom Harkin, D-IA

WHAT: Harkin arranged an earmark of nearly $8 million that made possible construction of a special sewage treatment plant serving Agriprocessors, a controversial meat-packing plant in Postville, Iowa, that was the subject of a massive immigration raid last year.

WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: The program Harkin used for the earmark is intended to help small towns cope with sewage problems, a fact that would have disqualified Agriprocessors from eligibility for the funds. The new plant doesn’t serve Postville residents.
