Qa’ Lat, Afghanistan – Comedian Stephen Colbert will be keeping troops entertained in the early morning hours with a live video feed from Forward Operating Base Lagman, in Afghanistan’s volatile southern region. Members of the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, along with U.S. Army Rangers and some Navy personnel will be invited to participate in Colbert Nation’s live studio audience at 11 pm eastern time, via satellite from this dusty base. Fifty or so U.S. troops are expected to attend the live taping.
It’s a nice break for the men and women on the base, even if preparing for it will require them to show at 2:30 am Afghan time. Since the 2nd Stryker Calvary arrived this summer from their home base in Germany, they have been fighting a growing Taliban insurgency in the Zabul Province. Their mission is to clear Taliban insurgents prior to Afghanistan’s Sept. 18 elections as part of the U.S. military’s push to aid Afghan Security Forces, who will be charged with security for the elections.
