How much does President Obama want the federal government to spend investigating hydraulic fracturing next year? Nearly $45 million, according to the just released fiscal year budget for 2013.

The Environmental Protection Agency budget includes a $14 million total hydraulic fracturing research request, three times as much as the $4.2 million requested for FY2012.

According to the EPA, the research will be coordinated with Department of Energy and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to assess “potential air, ecosystem, and water quality impacts of hydraulic fracturing.”

The USGS budget alone triples the funding request for hydraulic fracturing investigations, from $5.6 million to $18.6 million.

The Department of Energy also includes $12 million of funding to “improve the safety of natural gas development,” honing in on “the environmental, health, and safety risks of natural gas and oil production from hydraulic fracturing in shale and other geologic formations.”
