On Morning Joe this morning, Dan Rather said that one of the downsides of the internet is that “anonymous people frequently organized for partisan political purposes and/or their ideology absolutely blow up your reputation.”

“If your neighbor doesn’t like you he can virtually destroy you over a 24-36 hour period” Rather added, noting that “all sorts of misinformation, lies” can appear online.

“That moment gets frozen in time and many people identify you with that moment.” Rather concluded.

Dan Rather of course, was embarrassed new media, after bloggers began investigating his “60 Minutes” story on President George W. Bush’s service in the Texas National Guard.

That story is now known as “Rathergate,” and CBS fired four employees after a thorough investigation into the editorial work behind the story. Rather resigned in November of 2004.

Rather was also mocked by bloggers on ratherbiased.com, an early website dedicated to exposing Rather’s partisan approach to the news.
