Ron Paul has declined an invitation to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington D.C., according to a release from the American Conservative Union.

Paul will instead be campaigning in the state of Maine, where he has a good shot at winning a significant portion of votes.

Paul’s son, Senator Rand Paul, will speak at the conference instead.

“While we will miss Congressman Ron Paul, a perennial favorite among our attendees, we are honored to host Senator Rand Paul, a leader of the next generation of committed constitutional conservatives, at CPAC 2012,” said ACU Chairman Al Cardenas in a statement.

Ron Paul always drawn an enthusiastic group of supporters to the conference each year, famously tangling with some of the speakers during the event.

Last year, Donald Trump famously brushed off Ron Paul supporters, declaring, “Ron Paul cannot get elected, I’m sorry.”

Paul also has won the event’s presidential straw poll for two years in a row.

This year’s conference will take place Thursday, February 9 – Saturday, February 11, 2012, in Washington, DC.
