Committee Watch: Long-term budget issue to dominate discussion on the Hill this week

With Vice President Joe Biden expected to lead at least three bipartisan deficit-reduction talks this week, the Congressional Budget Office is scheduled to release its updated Long-Term Budget Outlook on Wednesday morning. CBO chairman Doug Elmendorf is scheduled to appear the following day before the House Budget Committee, chaired by Rep. Paul Ryan. Meanwhile, the House Energy and Commerce Committee will be holding several hearings on Medicare, while the House Ways and Means Committee will be conducting hearings on the finances of both Medicare and Social Security. On another front, the House Oversight Committee will be probing the bailout of General Motors.

Venezuela’s Sanctionable Activity

The hearing will address the possible sanctions provided for under U.S. policy and their application in cases where Venezuelan individuals, businesses, and/or the Venezuelan Government are proven to be sanctionable through U.S. laws. This will be a joint hearing with the Oversight National Security Subcommittee chaired by Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere chaired by Rep. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority: Is There a Security Gap?

This hearing will examine policies in place to ensure all necessary measures are being taken to protect the American people who use the DC Metro system, including safety, outages, and related matters.

 

House Ways and Means Committee:

The Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing on the recently released 2011 Annual Report of the Boards of Trustees of the Federal Hospital Insurance and Federal Supplementary Medical Insurance Trust Funds.  In what will be the first in a series of hearings on Medicare’s future, the Subcommittee will focus specifically on the Medicare program’s financial status.  The Subcommittee will hear testimony from Medicare’s two public trustees.  The hearing will take place on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, in 1100 Longworth House Office Building, beginning at 9:30 A.M.
The House Committee on Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security  will hold a hearing on Social Security’s current revenue streams, proposed changes to those structures and the impact they would have on the program, beneficiaries, workers and the economy.  The hearing will take place on Thursday, June 23, 2011 in B-318 Rayburn House Office Building, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
