There are plenty of words that come to mind when thinking of a
violent
mob of rioters destroying property and assaulting people in the streets. “
Criminal
,” “despicable,” and “terrible” would all be appropriate descriptors.
For incoming
Chicago
Mayor Brandon Johnson
, the first word that came to mind was “silly.”
NEW CHICAGO MAYOR DEFENDS TEENAGE RIOTERS, SAYS IT’S ‘NOT CONSTRUCTIVE’ TO ‘DEMONIZE’ THEM
Several hundred teenagers took to the streets to assault people violently, smash the windows of buildings, destroy cars, and commit robberies. Watching the videos, you could mistake Chicago for a Third World country rather than the third most populous city in the United States.

Johnson doesn’t care, though. Johnson did not condemn the rioters (saying only that he “in no way” condones them). Instead, he claimed that no one should “demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities.”
Opportunities to do what in their communities? Be criminals?
Johnson went further, though, saying that “demonizing children is wrong.” (Note that the violent rioting teenagers are now “children”). Johnson said we must keep the criminals “safe as well.” He then compared it to teaching middle school. (Note that the violent rioting teenagers are now middle schoolers). “They’re young,” Johnson said. “Sometimes they make silly decisions.”
Stealing a car and setting it a blaze is not a silly decision.
Pummeling two innocents and a CTA employee is not a silly decision.
Jumping on cars, looting, and vandalizing is not a silly decision.
It’s all violent, criminal behavior, and it deserves to be demonized, period. pic.twitter.com/t0PpYxhvnq

Don’t you hate it when your 17-year-old middle school child makes the “silly decision” to join a roving mob of criminals and start violently beating people in the streets?

Being a criminal with no regard for the lives or well-being of your fellow citizens is not a “silly decision.” It is a criminal one, and every rioter who took part in criminal behavior should have the book thrown at them. Being a teenager is not an excuse to be a criminal, or at least it shouldn’t be. For Johnson, it is a completely valid excuse because, apparently, laws should not apply to the “youth.”
Johnson has made it clear that he is going to be another pro-criminal mayor. He
supports
defunding the city’s police department, and now, he is making it clear that he thinks violence is OK for young people. The only people who made a “silly decision” here are the voters of Chicago, who decided that Johnson’s pro-criminal attitude was exactly what the city needed.
