Santorum condemns gay GI boos, GOProud takes pride

On the ground at the Florida CPAC confab, Examiner Campaign 2012’s Charlie Spiering blogged that FoxNews’ anchor Megyn Kelly – one of the moderators at last night’s FoxNews/Google debate – drew out a denunciation from fmr. Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum over the smattering of audience boos audible after a video question on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy from gay soldier Stephen Hill.  Kelly was quick to agree with Santorum’s assertion that it wasn’t clear if the hecklers were booing the soldier or the substance of his question.

GOProud, the group founded by gay conservatives because they found the Log Cabin Republicans’ conservative cred wanting, had been agitating for an apology from Santorum since early this morning.  The group issued a press release lauding the gay soldier and taking Santorum to task:

“That brave gay soldier is doing something Rick Santorum has never done – put his life on the line to defend our freedoms and our way of life.  It is telling that Rick Santorum is so blinded by his anti-gay bigotry that he couldn’t even bring himself to thank that gay soldier for his service.”

Santorum’s remarks seemed to satisfy GOProud, which RT’d a comment from GOProud spokesman Christopher Barron averring “Santorum does the right thing.”
