American Enterprise Institute has published an annotated version, entitled “The outstate effect,” complete with statistical tables, of my thesis, first published in the Washington Examiner, about how Hillary Clinton lost the “Outstate Midwest,” a category including the counties outside the million-plus metropolitan areas of the Midwestern states and Pennsylvania.
The tables show how Clinton received sharply lower percentages in the Outstate Midwest as compared to President Obama in 2012, and how President-elect Trump in most cases ran better there than George W. Bush did in his winning re-election race in 2004.
