Both Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney are starting off the week focusing on the reportedly $1.2 million Newt Gingrich received for his work for Freddie Mac.

“The facts are I didn’t personally get that kind of money.” said Newt Gingrich on CBS “Face The Nation” on Sunday, “It went to a consulting firm which had offices in three cities. The share I got was relatively small. We did consulting advice.”

But the Romney campaign, this morning released an email focusing on the inconsistency behind Gingrich’s explanations.

“For weeks now, Speaker Gingrich has struggled to explain exactly what he did in return for $1.6 million in fees from Freddie Mac. Not only has he distanced himself from his past work, but he is also distancing himself from the money he earned – saying it was for ‘overhead’ or that he didn’t ‘personally’ receive it.” said Romney campaign spokesperson Andrea Saul.

Bachmann called for the former speaker to return the money he recieved to American taxpayers.

“Since Newt has said he didn’t need the money, I call on him to return those taxpayer dollars and fully disclose the nature of his role with Freddie Mac.” she said in a statement. “Newt’s doublespeak on Freddie Mac and the $1.6 million he took to peddle his influence is part of his 30 year history as a Washington insider who will say anything to get elected.
