Prince George’s school’s chief gone by October

The superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools has negotiated an early release from his contract after agreeing to lead the school system in Philadelphia.

Superintendent William Hite’s last day in office will be Sept. 30, Prince George’s school officials announced Friday. Hite’s contract contains a 120-day notice provision, but he agreed to forgo his severance — equal to six month’s salary, or $125,000 — in order to leave early.

The Board of Education has begun to accept bids from search firms to find a new superintendent, and will announce an interim superintendent in August.

Around that time the board also plans to begin a series of community meetings to discuss the superintendent search process, which they plan to complete in the spring of 2013.

Hite served the Prince George’s School system for six years, taking over as superintendent in December 2008. He announced in June he was hired for the same post in Philadelphia.
